In the area of sustainability science
and technology, the Joint Programme has given priorities
to international cooperative works on environmental
monitoring and pollution reduction, especially in the
East Asian region. The Programme has funded a number
of domestic and international research projects in major
topic areas, including monitoring and risk assessment
of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and persistent
organic pollutants (POPs), remediation technologies
for arsenic pollution, and green chemistry. IERC staff
researchers, in cooperation with GIST faculty, have
also developed active research programmes. Based on
these past activities, the Programme has started a new
initiative that will guide future research programme.
The new initiative is focused on the environmentally
sound management of hazardous chemicals and its main
topic areas include:
Advanced technologies for the monitoring of EDCs, POPs,
and heavy metals
Acceptability and risk assessment of EDCs, POPs, and
heavy metals
Integrated watershed management of hazardous chemicals
Development of management options in cooperation with
practitioners
Monitoring and information networks in the East Asian
region
Biotechnological study of biodegradation and bioremediation
Enzymological applications for hazardous chemicals remediation
Toxicogenomic study for elucidating action mechanisms
of hazardous chemicals
Development of practical pollution reduction technologies
for industrial complexes
Case study of environmental quality management in industrial
complexes
